Norwegian Tamil poet and actor V.I.S Jeyapalan has been arrested in Sri Lanka for violating visa regulations. Jaffna-born Jeyapalan was arrested yesterday at Mankulam in the countrys north, police spokesman Ajith Rohana said. Five Russian naval ships in Colombo

Five Russian naval ships of the Pacific Fleet arrived at the Port of Colombo today for replenishment and crews’ relaxation. The ships were welcomed by the Sri Lanka Navy in accordance with naval traditions on their arrival. The ships, “Admiral Panteleyev”, “Peresvet”, “Admiral Nevelsky”, “Fotiy Krylov” and “Pechenga”, are on their way from the Mediterranean to their home port in Vladivostok.

“Admiral Panteleyev” is an anti-submarine ship commanded by Captain 1st Rank Oleg V. Puzin. It is 162 meters in length. It has a displacement of 7,595 tons and a complement of 92 officers and 336 seamen onboard.

Huawei No 3 in world smartphone market in Q3

Huawei, said the company has elevated its position to the number three position in the global smartphone market. Huawei Smartphones gained a 5.1 percent share, as it grew shipments 67% annually to 12.7 million units in Q3 according to new reports.
Researchers attributed the rise to strong sales of its higher-end Ascend P6 and the mainstream G610, particularly in China.

International community must not complicate issue

China reiterated wholehearted support for Sri Lanka, stating that the country has made progress in promoting human rights and towards national reconciliation.

China further called on the international community to desist from taking measures that ‘may complicate the issue’ and instead, help create an external environment conducive to the country’s stability.

A middle aged couple was hacked to death with sharp weapons at Halgasmulla, Akmeemana, Galle on Tuesday.The murdered couple has been identified as Urala Liyanage Lal Priyanatha, 50, a landed proprietor and his wife Anusha Liyanage, 48, residents of Kithulampitiya, Galle.
