Couple hacked to death

A middle aged couple was hacked to death with sharp weapons at Halgasmulla, Akmeemana, Galle on Tuesday.The murdered couple has been identified as Urala Liyanage Lal Priyanatha, 50, a landed proprietor and his wife Anusha Liyanage, 48, residents of Kithulampitiya, Galle. Akmeemana Police investigating following a complaint lodged by couple's son, found the two bodies yesterday on the access road leading to their tea plantation at Halgamulla. According to the complaint lodged by the son to the police, the couple had gone to their tea plantation on Tuesday morning in their own three wheeler and had not returned home until the following day. The police who found the bodies, suspect they had been murdered while returning home.

Priyantha had first joined the Navy and had been later employed at the National Housing Authority.

He was a popular social worker who had twice contested the Akmeemana Pradeshiya Sabha to be elected as a member initially on the Mahajana Eksath Perumunu ticket as the party's chief organiser for Akmeemana electorate and later on the United National Party ticket.

The couple had two daughters and a son.

The eldest daughter is an undergraduate at the Sri Jayawardanapura University while other two are studying for the G.C.E A/L examination.

Galle Additional Magistrate Gunendra Kumara Munasinghe who visited scene of the crime ordered the bodies to be sent to Karapitiya Teaching Hospital for the inquest.

Akmeemana Police are investigating.
